Project Background
WPI Mascot Rebrand – Full-Stack Brand Design & Engagement Specialist
WPI’s mascot, Gompei the Goat, is one of only two college goat mascots in the U.S., historically named after Gompei Kuwada, the Class of 1893 member who was appointed goat keeper due to his initials. Visitors to campus recognize Gompei through the two iconic bronze statues: the “Proud Goat” by the Quadrangle and the “Charging Goat” at the Sports and Recreation Center.
Objective
WPI engaged me to create a refreshed, friendly mascot identity that would appeal to the robotics, sciences, and alumni communities—one that could be utilized across fundraising, promotional events, and merchandising.
Key Outcomes
- Fundraising Boost: The updated mascot design contributed to over 2020,000 in new donations during the first year post-launch.
- Brand Expansion: Extended the mascot into unexpected formats—including a branded cheese product, expanding the mascot’s reach into merchandising.
Deliverables & Visual Assets
My deliverables incorporated a wide range of creative assets, including:
- Mascot illustrations:
- Gompei in WPI sweater
- Gompei as a construction worker
- Gompei as a scientist
- Large-scale plush mascot
- Puppet schematics and live-action use (used at events like a casino-themed fundraiser)
- Inflatable mascot versions
- Visual breakdowns of the mascot variants, supporting internal design documentation and strategy
Why This Project Stands Out
- Cross-disciplinary Scope: Delivered across design, branding, motion graphics, puppetry, and event execution.
- Measurable Impact: Tangible fundraising results tied directly to design and engagement strategy.
- Versatility and Innovation: The mascot transcended expectations—appearing not just in digital formats, but as a physical embodiment in merchandise, puppets, and inflatables.
